History
Lancaster was founded by “Honest A” Bledsoe in 1852 and incorporated by 1866, making it one of the first incorporated communities in Dallas County. Mr. Bledsoe modeled the city after his hometown of Lancaster, Kentucky. The city featured a traffic circle, now known as a town square, with streets entering in the middle from each side. By the mid-1850′s, Lancaster had bi-weekly mail delivery and regular stage coach service.
In December 1888, Lancaster became a stop for the Dallas & Waco railroad line. Then in 1891, it became part of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad line running from Dallas to the Gulf of Mexico. The first bank, R.P. Henry Bank, was founded in 1899 near the southeast corner of the town square. On February 27, 1934, the infamous Bonnie & Clyde robbed the R.P. Henry Bank and made their way to a getaway car on Malloy Bridge Road. They escaped with over $4000.
Modern day Lancaster is a wonderful place to live. As a 2005 and 2006 finalist for the All-American City Award and the distinct designation of Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation, Lancaster takes pride in having some of the most beautiful natural features in the Dallas area.
