History
Fort Worth has a long and rich history. The city began in 1849 as an Army outpost on a bluff overlooking the Trinity River. This fort was one of ten that stretched across area and named for Major General William Jenkins Worth (1794–1849), who was second in command to General Zachary Taylor at the opening of the Mexican-American War in 1846. Shortly thereafter, Fort Worth began to attract more and more people for the Eastern United States, when it became a stop on the Chisholm Trail, a well known trail for herding cattle to market.
After suffering the effects of the 1860’s Civil War, the town began to recover. With the extension of the railroad to Ft. Worth in 1876, the city grew. The Stock yards became the center of the regional cattle industry. With the establishment of two meat processing plants in the Fort Worth Stock yards, Fort Worth became the western most railhead for transporting cattle. Cattle were herded from all over the Southwest for processing and shipment to the east.
With the boom in business, cowboys took advantage of the city before the long trip to Kansas up the Chisholm trail. They bought their supplies and visited saloons. The salons, dance halls, and brothels grew to become an area named “Hell’s Half Acre”. Several attempts were made to clean up Hell’s half Acre before the 1900’s, when a series of events sparked the transition of the area. The first event was a shoot out in the street that killed a man. A few weeks later a woman was murdered. During this time, the first campaign for prohibition moved through Texas. By the end of 1889, Hell’s Half Acre began to change with urban growth of legal businesses and new homes. Camp Bowie was established on the western side of Ft. Worth in 1917, which further promoted business and progress in the city.
